Today Dr. Flannery, Roxane Geubue, and myself attended South Central College's Global Connections keynote address by Dr. Abdi Samatar, Professor of Geography and Global Studies at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Samatar's topic was 'The War on Terror and the Terror of War in the Global Project: The Consequences for Communities". He spoke for one hour to a full auditorium covering three interconnected themes: Political genealogy v. civic politics, war on terror v. terror of war, and Islam and politics. Dr. Samatar discussed these themes against the backdrop of the last 50 years of Somali history. He concluded by saying that as citizens of the United States we have a responsibility to hold our leaders accountable for global human rights and democratic values in the government's foreign policies.

As Dr. Tesdell noted, this was a great keynote presentation. I enjoyed Dr. Samatar's comments about our responsibilities as global citizens to be critical thinkers and to constantly evaluate the assumptions under which our government operates. I'm looking forward to our next shared cultural event!
Dr. Samatar's keynote
